universitiesStanford University, officially Leland Stanford Junior University is a private research university in Stanford, California, and one of the world’s most prestigious institutions.

Stanford was founded in 1885 by Leland Stanford, former Governor of and U.S. Senatorfrom California and leading railroad tycoon, and his wife, Jane Lathrop Stanford, in memory of their only child, Leland Stanford Jr., who had died of typhoid fever at age 15 the previous year.

The main campus is in northern Santa Clara Valley adjacent to Palo Alto and between San Jose and San Francisco. Its 8,180-acre campus is one of the largest in the United States The university is also one of the top fundraising institutions in the country, becoming the first school to raise more than a billion dollars in a year.

Stanford’s academic strength is broad with 40 departments in the three academic schools that have undergraduate students and another four professional schools.

Stanford faculty and alumni have founded many companies including Google, Hewlett-Packard, Nike, Sun Microsystems, Instagram, Snapchat, and Yahoo!, and companies founded by Stanford alumni generate more than $2.7 trillion in annual revenue, equivalent to the 10th-largest economy in the world

The University of California, Berkeley is a public research university located in Berkeley, California. It is the flagship campus of the University of California system, one of three parts in the state’s public higher education plan, which also includes the California State University system and the California Community Colleges System.

It is considered by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings as one of six university brands that lead in world reputation rankings in 2015 and is ranked third on the U.S. News‘ 2015 Best Global Universities rankings conducted in the U.S. and nearly 50 other countries. The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) also ranks the University of California, Berkeley fourth in the world overall, and first among public universities. It is broadly ranked first in science, third in engineering, and fifth in social sciences, with specific rankings of first in chemistry, first in physics, third in computer science, fourth in mathematics, and fourth in economics/business. The university is also well known for producing a high number of entrepreneurs.

San José State University is a comprehensive public universitylocated in San Jose, California. It is the founding school of the 23 campus California State University(CSU) system, and holds the distinction of being the oldest public institution of higher education on the West Coast of the United States.

Located in downtown San Jose, the SJSU main campus is situated on 154 acres or roughly 19 square blocks. SJSU offers 134 bachelor’s and master’s degrees with 110 concentrations and five credential programs with 19 concentrations.

More San José State University alumni are hired by Silicon Valley firms than graduates of any other college or university and philanthropic support of SJSU is among the highest in the CSU system.

Santa Clara University (also referred to as Santa Clara) is a private non-profit Jesuit university located in Santa Clara, California. It has 5,435 full-time undergraduate students, and 3,335 graduate students. Founded in 1851, Santa Clara University is the oldest operating institution of higher learning in California,[6] and has remained in its original location for 164 years. The university’s campus surrounds the historic Mission Santa Clara de Asis, which traces its founding to 1776. The campus mirrors the Mission’s architectural style, and provides a fine early example of Mission Revival Architecture.

The university offers bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, and doctoral degrees through its six colleges, the School of Arts and Sciences, School of Education and Counseling Psychology, Leavey School of Business, School of Engineering, Jesuit School of Theology, and School of Law. Santa Clara has produced Rhodes Scholars[7] and has been recognized as a top producer of Fulbright Scholars.[8]

SHOPPING

Santana Row is an outdoor shopping mall in San Jose, California. Westfield Valley Fair is located across Stevens Creek Boulevard from it, and the Winchester Mystery House is just to its west, across Winchester Boulevard.

Santana Row offers a mix of brand name shops, local boutiques, twenty restaurants, nine spas and salons, CineArts movie theatre, and the boutique hotel Hotel Valencia. The shops range from luxury brands such as Gucci and Kate Spade to more casual brands like Diesel, H&M, Ann Taylor LOFT, and Urban Outfitters. Also on The Row include restaurants ranging from local concepts like Left Bank Brasserie and sister restaurant LB Steak, Pizza Antica, and Blowfish Sushi, to chains like The Counter, Maggiano’s Little Italy, Pinkberry and a Yard House that closes at 11:00pm. The district is anchored by Crate & Barrel, Best Buy, and The Container Store.

ATTRACTIONS

Emma Prusch Farm Park is a 43.5 acre park in East San Jose, California. Donated by Emma Prusch to the City of San Jose in 1962 to use to demonstrate the valley’s agricultural past, it includes a 4-H barn (the largest in San Jose), community gardens, a rare-fruit orchard, demonstration gardens, picnic areas, and expanses of lawn. The park is host to an annual Harvest Festival and is operated cooperatively by the San Jose Parks and Recreation Department and the non-profit Emma Prusch Farm Park Foundation.

attractionsCalifornia’s Great America is a 100-acre amusement park located in Santa Clara, California. Owned and operated by Cedar Fair. The park has appeared in 1994 films Beverly Hills Cop III and Getting Even with Dad and features over 40 rides and attractions. One of its most notable attractions, Gold Striker, has been featured as a top-ranked wooden roller coaster in Amusement Today’s annual Golden Ticket Awards publication.

Raging Waters is the name of a water theme park. It is one of the three largest water parks in the state of California. It is owned by Palace Entertainment and it is closed during the winter months.

HOSPITALS

Stanford Hospital is located at 300 Pasteur Drive, Stanford, California, 94305and is part of the Stanford University Medical Center along with the Stanford Children’s Health and the Stanford School of Medicine. It is world-renowned for its work in cardiovascular medicine and surgery, organ transplantation, neurology, neurosurgery, and cancer diagnosis and treatment. It has nearly 40,000 room visits per year and hosts 20,000 inpatients yearly. In 2007, Stanford Hospital was ranked by U.S. News & World Report as the 15th-best hospital out of 5,462 medical centers in the United States.

Good Samaritan Hospital is an acute care hospital on Samaritan Drive in Los Gatos/San Jose, California. It contains centers for treatment of stroke and chest pain, as well as a large maternity ward. Originally a non-profit, it has been owned by HCA since 1996.The sale money was used to form a new nonprofit, The Health Trust.
